Shira Melbourne Cultural Fund

At Shira Melbourne, we are passionate about and actively involved in maintaining, fostering and celebrating the unique and vibrant, musical and literary culture of our community. We do this through a range of community events and activities. Our organisation is dedicated to creating meaningful experiences that celebrate Jewish cultures and bring people together. Our community activities include:

Music and Song

True to our name (Shir, meaning song), our community thrives on the power of music and song. Our talented Shira band plays at many events, like our winter kumsitz (get together) and our end of year event. The band and audience have participants of all ages and backgrounds. From classic Jewish melodies to contemporary compositions, our talented musicians and vocalists perform at sing-alongs and concerts, as well as other special events. They, along with guest singers, present music that allows us to explore and develop ancient and new musical styles.

Community-led lectures and panels

We love exchanging and debating ideas about literature and music. To that end, we host a variety of community-led workshops and lectures that delve into Jewish culture, arts and contemporary topics. We host topical and engaging lectures from scholars from both inside and outside the community membership, as well as panels including a diverse range of thinkers within the Jewish cultural space.

These discussions delve into various aspects of Jewish literature, song and heritage, deepening our Jewish cultural involvement and inviting others to share this cultural heritage.

Communal Meals

At Shira, we believe in the power of coming together around the table. Our communal meals provide a warm and welcoming environment where members of our community can connect, share stories and song, and celebrate Jewish culture. Join us for special occasions as we share delicious food, engage in lively literary conversations and story-telling, and strengthen the bonds of our community.

Children’s Programs

We are committed to nurturing the next generation of our community (3-10 year olds) through teen leadership. Our children’s activities offer engaging experiences that foster a love for Jewish musical and literary culture. Through interactive storytelling, song and crafts, we provide a safe and inclusive space for children’s cultural immersion in an age-appropriate way.
